Former Super Eagles striker Yakubu Aiyegbeni retires from football on his 35th birthday

Former Nigerian striker, Yakubu Aiyegbeni has announced that he is retiring from professional football today as he celebrates his 35th birthday. Aiyegbeni had been a free agent after being released by Coventry City earlier this year but after not signing for a new club, the forward has decided to end his playing days. After first moving to English football in January 2003, Aiyegbeni went on to enjoy a fine career with teams competing in the Premier League and Championship, with 367 appearances being made in all competitions. Aiyegbeni represented Portsmouth, Middlesbrough, Everton, Leicester City, Blackburn Rovers, Reading and Coventry, with a combined total of 141 goals being scored at those seven clubs. Aiyegbeni also netted 21 goals from 57 appearances for Nigeria.

Saudi Arabia to allow women to drive for the first time

Saudi Arabia says it will allow women to drive for the first time in the ultra-conservative kingdom. The kingdom, which announced the change on Tuesday, was the only the country in the world to bar women from driving and for years had garnered negative publicity internationally for detaining women who defied the ban. Women's rights activists since the 1990s have been pushing for the right to drive, saying it represents their larger struggle for equal rights under the law. The state-run Saudi Press Agency and state TV reported the news late Tuesday evening, saying a royal order was issued for both men and women to be issued drivers' licenses. A committee will be formed to look into how to implement the new order.

People getting blown away as Typhoon Hato hits Hong Kong and southern China .

Typhoon Hato, a maximum category 10 storm, slammed into Hong Kong on Wednesday lashing the Asian financial hub with wind and rain that uprooted trees and forced most businesses to close, while in some places big waves flooded seaside streets. There were reports of 34 people injured in Hong Kong while in the city of Macau, across the Pearl River estuary, three people were killed, authorities there said. In Hong Kong, more than 450 flights were cancelled, financial markets suspended and schools closed as Hato bore down, the first category 10 storm to hit the city since 2012. The storm also made landfall in China’s Guangdong province, in Zhuhai city adjacent to Macau, Chinese state news agency Xinhua reported. Numerous flights and trains were cancelled in Guangdong province, with Shenzhen’s International Airport particularly badly hit. Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, on Tuesday received Nigeria’s Lola Omolola, founder of a secret Facebook group called Female in Nigeria. FIN was founded in 2015 by Omolola, a movement of women focused on building compassion and providing support for one another, with the goal of having up to 1000 members in the group. However, the group exceeded its target as it recently hit one million members.
